Flowers of life

The theme of flowers dominates my art practice. Here, I will show you how it began and progressed.

My series of flower paintings was inspired by Emil Nolde, my favorite artist. Despite being a member of the National Socialist German Workers' Party and writing denunciations, he was declared degenerate in 1937 and banned from all artistic activities by the Imperial Chamber of Fine Arts.

Following his ban, Nolde retreated to the countryside where he built a house and created a garden. It was in this garden where he found inspiration to paint flowers and sunsets, and he even buried his drawings in the ground under the gorse bush. To avoid giving away his art practice, he used watercolors instead of oil paint.

In previous years, my works and performances were politically motivated. However, after hearing about the Pussy Riot case, I felt that political art had lost its value and chose to pursue escapism through painting flowers.

Research showed me that painting flowers during tumultuous times was not a new phenomenon. When the avant-garde movement was banned, many artists, such as Rodchenko, turned to painting flowers as a way to continue creating.

As a result, my flower paintings serve as a meteor of hidden stories.

In the shadow of memory

Flowers play many different roles and are considered very important in rituals.

A trip to the cemetery is an annual ceremony in my family. Now I go there with my grandmother. I never spent much time near the graves of my relatives. I have always loved to walk between other people's graves and think. Recently, I thought, will I come here without my grandmother?

It seems to me that the idea that a cemetery is a new home for the dead is very outdated. Their home is in our memory and it doesn't matter where the remains are.
